Bordalo II

BIOGRAPHY

Bordalo II is a visual artist and chose his artistic name as a tribute to his grandfather (the painter Real Bordalo), promoting a continuity and reinvention of his artistic legacy. His production in sculptures began when he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where experimentation with new materials took him away from painting and brought him closer to his current production.

Taking the public space as a stage for his explorations with colors, shapes and dimensions, Bordalo found the main strength of his production in the use of trash and discarded objects as compositional elements. With plastic, metal and electronic materials, he creates three-dimensional pieces referencing animals and nature, in a political and social bias of criticism to predatory consumption and the practices of dismantling environmental protection.

In his works, Bordalo II works on the theme of the excessive production and consumption of things, which result in the continuous production of “garbage” and consequently the destruction of the planet. These are the central themes of his production. This “garbage” assumes itself as the unusual and unique raw material that the artist uses in the construction of small and large scale pieces spread around the world and that, above all, intend to be the vehicle of a manifesto – conceived in the creation of a vibrant and eye-catching universe – to invoke the needs of reflection and socio-ecological responsibility.
