São Caetano do Sul, SP, 1988

Karola Braga is an artist and olfactory researcher. She has a master’s degree in Visual Poetics from the University of São Paulo (ECA/USP) and a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP). In her work, the artist seeks to explore the problematic of the relationship between absence x presence, memory x oblivion, bringing dualities as a theme that permeate much of her production.

A recurrent element in her work is the olfactory sphere. Because they are loaded with symbolic and cultural constructions and their power to evoke memories – individual and collective – smells are bridges chosen by the artist to challenge perception and space, create sensations, access memories and, above all, tell stories.

Since 2015 she has participated in exhibitions and awards in important institutions in Brazil and in countries like France, Germany, United States, Switzerland and Iran. She integrated the Artist Residency Program at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris by Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (2017) and Kooshk Residency in Tehran, awarded the Kooshk Artist Residency Award (KARA 2018). She was nominated for the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Fellowship and Commission Program 2020 (Miami) and Bloom Art Prize Weihenstephaner 2019 (Cologne). She participated in the 13 ̊ Bienal do Mercosul and this year is among the finalists for the 9th Art and Olfaction Awards in Los Angeles in the category Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent.
