Sofia Lotti

Poços de Caldas, MG, 1991

Born in Poços de Caldas, Brazil, Sofia Lotti (1991) grew up amid displacements between rural and urban scapes. From an early age, the artist manifested her interest in contemplating nature and manipulating different materials. Her artistic training was marked by the diversity of art techniques, which gradually were employed in creating images that revisit and unfold the landscape genre. Usually, Lotti departs from photographic images taken during her travels and walks into nature. Later, she revisits her photos, adapting the composition to the mediums of textile, painting, or soft-pastel drawings, a triad that forms the core of her practice.

Sofia Lotti’s research is based on color. The artist emphasizes the luminous qualities by paying attention to the pigments, creating her own materials, like the soft-pastel, which she has been producing autonomously since 2017, or painting with egg tempera. In the tapestries, Lotti plays with colors made available by the textile industry. However, her palette is more expressive than realistic. The artist creates well-defined areas with solid colors which interact sometimes by contrast, other times by proximity. The perception of her compositions  swings between the recognition of forms and their dissolution in abstraction. Movement, in Lotti’s work, is not only perceptual but procedural, leading her to participate in artistic residencies and revisit her hometown to renew her perspective.

In 2022, Sofia Lotti opened her first solo exhibition, Ao redor, at Massapê Projects, in São Paulo, Brazil. Her works were included in group shows such as: Cores vivas, at Gruta, in São Paulo, Brazil (2022); Singularidades confluentes, at Bianca Boeckel Gallery, in São Paulo, Brazil (2021); Pensaram ser paisagem, era corpo, at Kura,  in São Paulo, Brazil (2018); Experimentação de arte em projeto, at Gaia Gallery, in Campinas, Brazil (2014; Retratos: o que não se vê, at Casa de Tijolo Art Space, in São Paulo, Brazil (2013); Três artistas jovens – Diversidades poéticas, at Moreira Salles Institut (IMS), in Poços de Caldas, Brazil (2012). Lotti participated in several artist residencies around the world, like the ones at Oak Spring Garden Foundation, in Upperville, United States (2022); at Kunstkvarteret Lofoten, in Leknes, Norway (2022); Pivô, in São Paulo, Brazil (2018); and at Mooste KülalisStuudio (MoKS), in Mooste, Estonia (2016). In 2023, she was part of the group of artists in the Usina Luis Maluf Artist Residency ́ program. Her works are part of the collections of Acervo Artístico Municipal, Santo André, Brazil; and of Oak Spring Garden Foundation, Upperville, United States.
